How it works

From your answers to a signed letter: what happens at each step, what the doctor decides, and what happens if they cannot write one.

    You answer the questions online

    You tell us about your mental health, the animal (up to two) and what you need the letter for. There is no appointment to book.

  2. 2

    A GMC-registered doctor reviews your answers

    The doctor decides whether they can confirm, on clinical grounds, that the animal supports your mental health. If they cannot, they will not write a letter, and you get a full refund.

  3. 3

    Your letter arrives as a signed PDF

    It is sent to your inbox. Where medically appropriate, most letters are issued the same day or by 9am the next day.

What the doctor is deciding

The doctor is not checking boxes. There is no list of conditions that qualify for an emotional support animal in UK law, so the decision is clinical: having reviewed your answers, can the doctor stand behind a statement that your animal supports your mental health? That is what the letter says, so that is what they have to be satisfied of.

What you get

  • A letter naming you and the animal or animals it covers.
  • The doctor’s confirmation that the animal supports your mental health.
  • The doctor’s name, GMC number, signature and date.
  • Valid for 12 months.

It costs £49, paid once. There is no subscription and nothing to renew.

What you do with it

Send it with your request, most often a written pet request to your landlord. It supports the request; it does not decide it. Using the letter with your landlord.

Common questions

What happens if the doctor cannot write a letter?

You get a full refund. The doctor only writes a letter where they can confirm, on clinical grounds, that the animal supports your mental health.

How quickly will I get my letter?

Where medically appropriate, most letters are issued the same day or by 9am the next day.

Can I get a refund after the letter is sent?

No. Once a letter has been written and sent, it cannot be refunded.

How many animals can one letter cover?

Up to two pets: a dog, a cat or another animal.

How long is the letter valid?

12 months from the date the doctor signs it.
